Simon J Clark, Prof

Advisor

Professor Simon J. Clark is an Advisor at Forbion and holds a Professorship at the University Eye Hospital Tübingen, Germany, and an honorary Professorship at the University of Manchester, UK.

Trained as a protein biochemist at the University of Oxford, he is now a specialist in the complement system and is particularly interested in the role of extracellular matrix in moderating immunity and inflammation. For over twenty years Professor Clark has studied the role of complement in health and disease and made a number of significant contributions to the field, characterising the functional characteristics of the soluble regulators of complement.

Currently, Prof. Clark focuses on ocular immunity and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and runs both basic research and translational research programmes in Europe’s largest ophthalmic research institute at the University of Tübingen.

Professor Clark has a position on the executive board of Complement UK as well as the European Complement Network (Treasurer), and is a member of the scientific advisory board for the Macular Society UK. He is an Editor at Frontiers in Immunology and Scientific Reports and serves a reviewer for many other peer reviewed journals. In 2015, Professor Clark co-founded the Manchester Eye Tissue Repository which houses post-mortem donor eye tissue for use in research and represents one of the largest such tissue repositories in Europe. In 2021 he co-founded the biotech company Complement Therapeutics (CTx), which focuses on developing complement modifiers for treating inflammatory disease.
